How Does Knee Replacement Surgery Work?
Knee replacement surgery is also known as knee arthroplasty. It is the procedure in which the worn-out and damaged parts of your knee joint will be replaced with artificial implants.
It works like
Accessing the joints
The surgeon makes an incision around the knees to expose the damaged area after giving you the anaesthesia.
Removing the damaged part
The surgeon then carefully removes the worn-out surfaces of the bones forming the knee joint. This will include the lower end of the thigh bone, which is often known as the femur, the upper end of the shin bone, known as the tibia, and sometimes the underside of the kneecap, also known as the patella.
Implanting the prosthesis
The artificial components made of durable materials that are safe to implant inside the body like, metal alloys, high-grade plastic, and sometimes ceramics are implanted to replace the natural joint surface.
Balance
Now, the surgeon meticulously positions the implants to ensure the new joint's proper alignment and smooth movement.
Closing the incision
When the joint is balanced the surgical site is stitched and stapled closed.
PS- With technological advancement, basic replacement surgery is now being done with robotic procedures. This robot knee transplant surgery takes comparatively less time, promotes faster recovery and has better results.
What is the Need for Knee Replacement Surgery?
Knee replacement surgery is required when the individual:
- Experience severe pain in the joints.
- Experience stiffness in the knee that limits daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, or getting up from a chair.
- Experience pain that persists despite conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy and injections.
- When a person's x-ray has confirmed severe joint damage.
